Scuba diving on Rhodes Greece
Rhodes Island is a significant tourist destination for at least 60 years now.
It comes on the top of tourist’s favourite destinations as it combines natural beauty, culture & architecture, gastronomy and of course kilometres of wonderful beaches: The cultural Kallithea springs, the cosmopolitan Faliraki beach and Tsambika beach, the iconic Anthony Quinn beach and so many other!
All this variety and diversity of coastline provides an ideal ground for some amazing Scuba Diving.
Why Choose Rhodes for your diving Destination?
Crystal Blue warm water: The blue of our Sea is indeed unique. The visibility can reach more than 20 meters and the temperature can go up to 30 degrees (August). Besides temperature and visibility, the conditions are ideal for divers. In the east side of the island (where all the resorts are located) there are no waves for a period of at least 5 months. Currents are weak and rare and in general sea conditions are as good as it can get!
Interesting marine fauna and flora: Mediterranean is a totally different ecosystem from the tropics and should not be compared with these areas. The rivers pouring minerals and nutrients in Mediterranean are very limited, the average water temperature is much lower than the tropics so the number of phytoplankton is way less. As a result, the population of fish in the coastal zone are smaller than in the tropics.
That doesn’t mean that there are no fish and other marine creatures in Mediterranean.
Actually, the diversity of marine life that you can see diving around Rhodes is truly amazing.
Local species with invading species (like the trumpet fish, the lionfish and others) in combination with cephalopods, crustaceans, nudibranchs, sponges and soft corals are creating an amazing collage of marine life.
From big groups of oceanic snappers, to a bright purple flambelina (nudibranch) posing at your camera Lense, there will always be something to spice up your dives!
Geomorphology and Archeology: Rhodes is located on a location with significant volcanic history. That can be reflected on the geological signs all around the coastline!
Elevation lines (the east side of the island is rising whilst the west is sinking in the sea), canyons and numerous caves and caverns are some of them.
Under the water the volcanic activity has its marks too. Canyons, Deep walls (such as the great wall of Ladiko, Ghost net etc.) and numerous caves and caverns (such as the great Cave of Cleovoulos in Lindos and the breath-taking cave of Seal at Anthony Quinn Bay) that can guarantee a fantastic diving experience for advance divers.
Apart from volcanic activity, history too has left its marks in the seas around island!
Don’t forget that Rhodes has always been an important island, centre of commerce and a strategic stronghold. Historical signs can be found in each and every dive, no matter how deep of shallow it is.
from ceramic artifacts (mostly pottery) to 2WW relics and even modern shipwrecks (such as the popular Wreck of Giannulli at the area of Plimiri).
One thing is for sure!
Your dives on Rhodes are going to be interesting and we at H2O Diving Centre Rhodes Greece are here to help you enjoy every underwater minute of your diving vacation!
